Goodbye Rosetta, Hello Livemocha PDF Print E-mail

As noted in previous posts, effective June 30, 2008, Rosetta Stone online language learning will no longer be available to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach library patrons. In a letter dated September 21, 2007, Rosetta Stone notified public libraries that after “careful analysis the company has decided to discontinue access online for public libraries.” The only option offered by Rosetta Stone was language learning through computers in the library.  The letter can be viewed on the Orange Beach Public Library website: www.orangebeachlibrary.org.

The Orange Beach Public Library suggests a free online language learning site Livemocha.

Livemocha is a free online website where members can tackle 160 hours of beginning or intermediate lessons in French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Hindi or English.

For more information, select the Read more link below.

The site is still in beta, or testing, phase; advertising will soon be added, as well as charges for some premium content and services. But for now it’s free!

According to the website, Livemocha is redefining the language learning market by integrating rich dynamic online instructional content with a social network of native language speakers.

Livemocha’s approach to language learning includes practicing speaking and writing as well as conversing with native speakers online. Members chat online by typing messages, by talking or, if they have a Webcam, by video, in exchanges with others who want to tutor or be tutored.

Livemocha keeps learners motivated through competitions, a language buddy system and community encouragement. For more information on how the program works and to sign up for a free account, please visit www.livemocha.com

Please let us know what you think about Livemocha.
